India go to Ranchi one up. In Lucknow on Tuesday night, captain Shreyas Iyer hit an unbeaten 102 off 43 balls and India chased 172 with more than five overs to spare. On Friday the teams meet again, at the JSCA International Stadium Complex, for the 2nd T20I of the India vs West Indies series. This preview covers the facts first: when and where it is, the squads, and how the tour has gone so far. Then it looks at the match-ups that are likely to decide Friday's game, and at what a sensible approach to the markets looks like when one side has just won by eight wickets.

How the tour has gone so far

The one-day leg set the tone for a high-scoring tour. India won the first ODI in Thiruvananthapuram by eight wickets, with Virat Kohli making 139 not out and Kuldeep Yadav taking 4 for 40. Kohli also passed 15,000 ODI runs in that innings. Guwahati was the wild one. West Indies made 405 for 7, their highest ODI total, and still lost. Shubman Gill's unbeaten 223 off 133 balls carried India to 406 for 2 in 43.3 overs, the highest successful chase India have ever made in ODIs. West Indies hit back in Mullanpur, where Shai Hope's 162 not out chased down 352. India took the ODI series 2–1, and Gill was player of the series with 334 runs.

The T20 squads are very different from the ODI ones. Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Gill and Jadeja are not in the T20I group, and Iyer leads a younger side with Tilak Varma as his deputy.

1st T20I recap: Lucknow, 6 October

West Indies were bowled out for 171 in 19.1 overs. Sherfane Rutherford top-scored with 56 off 34, but no one stayed with him for long enough. Naman Dhir, on T20I debut, took 3 for 31. India's chase was never in doubt: 172 for 2 in 14.4 overs, with Iyer's 102 not out his maiden T20I hundred. West Indies also handed a debut to Kamil Pooran, and Akeal Hosein played his 100th T20I.

Two things from that game matter for Ranchi. First, India got home with 32 balls to spare, so 171 was clearly well below par on that surface. West Indies need a bigger total or early wickets, ideally both. Second, India's batting depth was hardly tested. Only three or four Indian batters got a hit, so Friday may be the first real look at the middle order under pressure, if West Indies can make early inroads.

Squads

India: Shreyas Iyer (c), Tilak Varma (vc), Ravi Bishnoi, Naman Dhir, Shivam Dube, Ishan Kishan (wk), Axar Patel, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Sanju Samson (wk), Abhishek Sharma, Arshdeep Singh, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Mayank Yadav, Prince Yadav.

West Indies: Shai Hope (c, wk), Jewel Andrew (wk), Roston Chase, Matthew Forde, Shimron Hetmyer, Akeal Hosein, Amir Jangoo, Shamar Joseph, Gudakesh Motie, Keemo Paul, Kamil Pooran, Rovman Powell, Sherfane Rutherford, Quentin Sampson, Romario Shepherd, Shamar Springer.

Playing XIs are confirmed at the toss, around 6:30 pm. Teams that win big often keep the same side, so a settled Indian XI is the likeliest outcome. West Indies may look at their balance after 171 fell short.

Five match-ups to watch in Ranchi

1. India's openers against the West Indies new ball

Shamar Joseph and Matthew Forde give West Indies genuine pace at the start. India's aggressive openers want to use the powerplay. If West Indies are going to level the series, the most direct route is two wickets inside the first four overs, which would put Iyer in early rather than at the platform he enjoyed in Lucknow.

2. Akeal Hosein in the powerplay

Hosein's left-arm spin with the new ball is one of West Indies' best weapons in T20 cricket. Against a top order with left-handers in it, how many overs Hope gives him early, and whether India target him or play him out, is a small battle that can shape the first ten overs.

3. India's spin depth through the middle

Kuldeep, Bishnoi, Axar and Washington Sundar mean India can bowl spin from both ends for long stretches. West Indies' middle order of Rutherford, Powell, Hetmyer and Shepherd is built to hit spinners. Overs 7 to 15 are where West Indies have to score at nine or ten an over without losing wickets in pairs, and they could not do that for long enough in Lucknow.

4. Naman Dhir's second outing

A debutant with three wickets usually keeps his place. Watch whether Iyer uses him in the same phase, and whether West Indies have done their homework this time.

5. The toss and the dew

Ranchi in October is a night game in eastern India, and evening dew is a common factor at that time of year. Dew makes the ball harder for spinners to grip in the second innings, so teams winning the toss often prefer to chase. Do not assume this, though. Check the conditions on the night, and treat the toss result as information rather than a verdict.

What the markets are likely to show, and how to read them

After an eight-wicket win and a 2–1 ODI series, expect India to open as clear favourites in the match odds market, probably at a short price. A short price is not the same as a sure thing. Turn the number into a percentage before you think about anything else: divide 100 by the price. India at 1.40 implies roughly a 71% chance, which means the market expects West Indies to win this kind of game about three times in ten. If you cannot explain why that estimate is too low or too high, there is nothing to bet on. Our guide to reading cricket odds on 99exch walks through decimal prices, the bookmaker market and session lines step by step.

Three practical points for a match like this one:

  • Session lines will be set high. After a 171 versus 172-for-2 game, the 6-over and 20-over run lines will reflect a high-scoring expectation. Know what YES and NO mean before the first ball. Our explainer on session and fancy markets covers how these lines work.
  • Prices swing hardest on wickets. In a T20 chase, one wicket in the powerplay can move a 1.40 favourite to 1.80 in a single ball. Chasing those swings in-play, on a stream that runs behind the ground, is how small budgets disappear quickly.
  • Laying the favourite carries liability. Laying India at 1.40 for ₹1,000 risks only ₹400, but laying at bigger prices later in a game can risk several times your stake. If the difference between back and lay is still fuzzy, read back vs lay explained first.
